The South African learnt his trade at Newcastle before being wooed to under-performing Norwich City by former gaffer Glenn Roeder. The youngster was integral to Roeder's team at the end of the 07-08 season and in the 08-09 season, but found options limited under Roeder's successor at Carrow Road, Bryan Gunn. He returned to South Africa in 2009, hoping to improve his chances of playing for Bafana Bafana in the South African World Cup in 2010.

Pattison is looking to return to England and might be seen as a positive addition to Grayson's promotion-pushing side, with an ability to provide the kind of decisive passes and athletic energy that would surely be welcome, especially from the bench.

He is perhaps best known amongst English fans for his off-field antics while at Norwich, however he has not repeated his misbehavior in South Africa, while Ross McCormack is a testament to Simon Grayson's ability to turn players around.

Pattison is still under contract with Mamelodi Sundowns, but his current club has agreed to his extended trial at Elland Road. Other players likely to be involved in the match include Maik Taylor, Ben Parker, Lloyd Sam and Billy Paynter and Ramón Núñez.
